The meeting commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address delivered by Professor Dr. A B M Harun-ur-Rashid, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), BUET. Subsequently, a brief introductory presentation on the Department of EEE was shown to the attendees.

This was followed by a speech from Professor Dr. Pran Kanai Saha, Chair of the BUET EEE Alumni Steering Committee. His address emphasized the importance of establishing a strong alumni association, outlined the department’s expectations from its alumni, and highlighted the significance of mutual cooperation and contributions between the alumni and the department.

Next, a discussion session on the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum of the EEE Department was held. This session was conducted and moderated by Professor Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah. During this session, alumni were invited to share their perspectives and provided the following feedback:

Summary of Alumni Feedback
Academic Experience and Curriculum
  • Alumni emphasized the need for curriculum enhancements based on their academic experiences.
  • Early introduction to proposal writing was recommended to better prepare students for employment and higher studies.
  • It was suggested that fourth-year thesis work should commence earlier, with structured guidance and support.
  • A dedicated design course should be introduced earlier in the academic program.
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on literature review skills and mentorship from experienced faculty.
Graduate Employability
  • Alumni noted that while graduates perform well academically, they often lack readiness for practical industry demands.
  • A gap was identified between academic accomplishments and real-world skill application.
  • Alumni observed that many graduates' resumes lack distinctive elements that appeal to employers.
  • They stressed the need for substantial efforts in equipping students with practical, job-ready skills.
  • Alumni expressed a willingness to contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing employability training.
Leadership and Soft Skills
  • Opportunities for leadership development should be created for both students and alumni.
  • Essential leadership qualities should be nurtured from the early stages of academic life.
  • Communication skills were identified as a crucial component of effective leadership and should be a focus area.
  • Alumni highlighted the importance of instilling the right mindset to ensure future success.

Following this, a session was held on ways alumni can contribute to the Department of EEE. This session was moderated by Professor Dr. Quazi Deen Mohammad Khosru. Alumni participants discussed the formation of a formal alumni association, reasons behind the emigration of alumni from Bangladesh, and potential policy- and industry-level actions to address this trend. They shared ideas on how the alumni association could facilitate solutions through collaborative discussions. Additionally, long-standing issues at BUET were addressed, and it was suggested that regular meetings could help in resolving both personal and institutional challenges. The session also touched upon the draft constitution and by-laws of the association.

A dedicated session on the constitution and by-laws of the BUET EEE Alumni Association followed, conducted by Associate Professor Mr. Yeasir Arafat. He provided a clear overview of the initially proposed constitution and by-laws, which had received preliminary approval at a BUET Undergraduate Studies (BUGS) meeting. This was followed by an open discussion where alumni commented on the draft.

The meeting also addressed the formation of a Steering Committee, which will play a pivotal role in organizing and conducting the forthcoming elections for the BUET EEE Alumni Association. Discussions included planning the next meeting and delegating responsibilities to ensure timely progress toward holding the election. The urgency of conducting the election was emphasized, reflecting the collective commitment to establishing a structured and accountable alumni body. To this end, a Steering Committee was formed consisting of EEE faculty members and alumni who were present and willing to serve. This Steering Committee will temporarily oversee the responsibilities of the BUET EEE Alumni association and organize its first election at the earliest possible time. The meeting concluded with a photo session attended by faculty members and participating guests.
